How Do You Make A Flower Crown?

There are many ways to make a flower crown. The materials used will depend on the age and dexterity of your children. Let’s take a look at how to make a few different styles.

How to Make A Construction Paper Flower Crown

This is a great option for your littlest children. They can customize the color of their crown’s bands and add all sorts of personalized decorations.

Supplies:

• Light cardstock
• Glue or double-stick tape
• Flowers and leaf sprigs
• Stapler
• Scissors

Step 1:

Cut 1 ½ to 2-inch strips of green cardstock (or your child’s favorite color). Measure the pieces around your child’s head to gauge the right length of the strips.

Step 2:

Place the cut strips on a table. Place double-stick tape or drops of glue on the strips.

Step 3:

Let your children adorn the sticky strips with flowers and leaves. You can use faux flowers, or you can cut different color floral designs out of construction paper.

Step 4:

If you’ve used glue, let the strips dry completely. Then staple the pieces together. You’re done! Your child’s flower crown is ready to wear.

How to Make a Wire Flower Crown

If you have artistic pre-teens in your family, you can make flower crowns with wire bases and fresh flowers.

Supplies:

• Fresh flowers and greenery
• Natural hemp wrapped wire
• Floral wire and tape
• Wire cutters
• Yarn

Step 1:

Measure your child's head with a piece of yarn. You’ll use this as the guide to cut your covered wire to the right size. Cut two or more strips of wire just slightly longer than the size of the yarn.

Step 2:

Make your crown foundation. Braid two or more pieces of the cut wire together. Then bend the points towards one another and connect them to make a circle. Place on the head to make sure it will fit once your flowers are added. 

Step 3:

Prep your flower attachments. Cut several pieces of floral wire and floral tape. You’ll use this to attach your flowers and greenery.

Step 4:

Get your greenery together. Gather and trim or pare your flowers, leaving about three inches to the stem.

Step 5:

Attach flowers to your wire foundation. Try using one or two large blossoms as your focal point and accent with several smaller flowers and foliage. Use the floral wire if you need a bit of extra security for your additions.

Step. 6:

Flip your flower crown back and forth. While you are working, check to make sure your work looks clean. Once you’ve added all your flowers, examine your entire design to see if you need to fill empty gaps with more greenery or smaller flowers.

Step 7:

Place the crown on your child's head and make any necessary adjustments so it sits comfortably without slipping or being too tight. 

Step 8:

You can extend the life of your child's flower crown by misting it with water and storing it in the refrigerator when it isn't being worn. Your fresh floral wreath should last up to five days.

How to Make A Flower Crown Just From Flowers

Get back to nature by creating a flower crown just with its namesake.

Supplies:

• Long-stemmed Fresh Flowers
• Yarn
• Scissors
• Floral Tape (optional)

Step 1:

Measure heads with a piece of yarn. You’ll use this as a length guide for making your free-standing flower crown. Cut the yarn to the right size.

Step 2:

Start with three thick, long-stemmed flowers, like dandelions.  Hold them parallel to one another with the blooms together. Take one of the outside stems and cross it over the inside stem.

Step 3:

Take the other outside stem and cross it over the new inside stem to begin your braid. Follow this pattern about halfway down.

Step 4:  

Add another flower in the space between the outside stem you’re about to cross over and the inside stem. Press it into the inside stem and braid over it, so it becomes a part of the braid.

Step 5:

Once you’ve braided the new stem in, break off the old stem it has been joined to and continue to braid down. Add new flowers in the same manner as needed. Tip: If the flower has a thin stem, you do not need to break it off.  

Step 4:

Continue the braid until you reach the length of your yarn.

Step. 5:

Thread the remaining stems back into the start of the braid to make a circle formation, and then tie the loose ends into a knot. You can reinforce your closure with some floral tape. Your free-flowing flower crown is ready to wear!
