Keeping Your Baby Warm and Cozy All Night: 3 Tips

As parents, we always want to make sure our children are as comfortable as possible. But with babies who can’t vocalize their feelings (at least, not with words), this is often easier said than done.

Fortunately, if you’re wondering how to keep your baby warm at night, this guide is for you.

Ensuring your little one’s comfort at night comes down to several factors, including clothing and room temperature. In this guide, we’re sharing our top tips for how to keep babies warm at night so that you and your little one can both sleep soundly.

Tip #1: Choose the Right Sleepwear

With baby sleepwear options ranging from one-pieces to sleep sacks, determining how to dress your baby for sleep can feel a little overwhelming.

Here’s a helpful rule of thumb to keep in mind: generally speaking, you only need to put your baby in one more layer than you would wear.

For instance, if you feel comfortable in shorts and a T-shirt, your baby will probably feel best in a bodysuit with long sleeves and pants. Layering is critical to understanding sleepwear for babies. Baby too cold? Add a layer. Too warm? Remove a layer or two.

Other Sleepwear Guidelines

When looking at baby boy or baby girl pajamas, you’ll want to invest in snug-fitting options. Sleepwear choices typically include:

  • Swaddles
  • Sleep sacks
  • One-piece footie pajamas
  • Two-piece sets
  • Footless pajamas

Your baby’s needs will change as they grow older or depending on the room temperature and season. Many children want to feel less restricted in movement as they age, making the transition from a sleep sack to regular baby girl or baby boy pajamas ideal.

Tip #2: Set the Ideal Room Temperature for Your Baby

Aside from clothing, room temperature also plays an essential role in keeping your baby cozy at night. It’s recommended to keep your baby’s room temperature between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re not sure whether your child’s room is at an appropriate temperature (i.e. if you don’t have a thermostat in your baby’s room), consider investing in a thermometer. Many smart baby monitors have temperature sensors so you can easily check the temperature and humidity levels in your baby’s nursery.

Tip #3: Use Sleep Sacks Instead of Blankets

When it comes to bedding, it’s important to consider your infant’s age. A warm blanket and pillows are unsafe for babies under 18 months because they increase the risk of suffocation, entanglement, and strangulation.

For newborns or babies only a few months old, sleep sacks (sometimes called sleep bags) offer a safer option. A sleep sack resembles a sleeping bag with arms, complete with a zipper to make diaper changes easy.

A sleep sack provides your child with warmth and comfort with minimal risks—and it doesn’t feel too restricting on those little legs and feet, either! So, what should a baby wear under a sleep sack? Depending on the weather and room temperature, babies should wear snug-fitting pajamas under their sleep sack. Many parents pair them with long-sleeved sleepwear for cold weather.

Other Sleep Tips to Keep in Mind

Looking for even more peace of mind when it comes to ensuring your baby’s comfort during sleep? Check out these additional sleep safety tips:

  • Consider your bassinet location – Move your baby’s crib away from drafty windows and air vents. Also, avoid using a space heater in your child’s room; never leave one unattended.

  • Avoid coverings for your baby’s head – While hats or beanies are well-intentioned, they’re unnecessary when your baby is asleep as they could slip off in the night.

Practice safe sleep habits – Put your baby to sleep alone in their crib or bassinet, on their back. It’s best not to use regular mattresses, couches, car seats, or swings for sleep.
